Alfred and Caroline married on Dec 15, 1852 in Streetsville, Ontario. She was the daughter of William Shipman and Maria Cleveland.
Note from Gordn Lickfold - You will know that John Lickfold (1804 - 79) was
brought up at Hookhams, and that his ancestors ran the farm for several
generations before him. It is also likely that Alfred (1827 - 1900) was
born there; being the first child of John & Anna Lickfold, he was baptised
at Northchapel church (which is closer to Hillgrove than Lurgashall church)
before the family moved away to Headley Mill.)
Several years ago, when I visited Ida (who wrote the "history") in Owen Sound, she mentioned that she was sorry that I hadn't come sooner, that she had sold the family bible at a garage sale. I was incredulous, as I didn't know that a family bible existed - AND that she had sold it at a garage sale. I asked if she remembered to whom she had sold it. She gave me a slip of paper with the buyers name and phone number.
I called the man and asked if I might come and see the bible. He was very nice and invited me to his home. After seeing the bible, a leather covered, pulpit version (large) with Caroline's handwriting on the pages between the testaments, I asked if he would sell it to me. Expecting the man to ask a large price, I was astounded when he said that he wanted $20 Canadian, exactly what he had paid for it. He said that he was happy for the bible to be back in the family.
I gave the bible to my dad, as he was the senior Lickfold. When Dad died, I brought it home with me. I have had it refurbished, as the cover was worn and there was danger of losing some pages. It now has a place of honor in my living room.
