THE FAMILY TREES    INTRODUCTION

by Gordon Lickfold

Some people may not be interested in the family trees of people who are not in their particular branch of the family.  However, I have produced the same pack for everyone because Branches 1, 5 and 8 are closely connected, as are Branches 3 & 4.

There is no Branch 6.

That only leaves Branches 2 and 7.  [And, of course, it’s easier for me to produce the same pack for everyone!]

I have deliberately not given dates for living people.

Overview of all Branches of the Lickfold Family

I           The Lickfolds of Sussex

Page 52 shows how Trees 1 and 5 branch off Tree 8.

Branch 2:

The ancestry of Thomas Lickfold, who lived at Witley in 1758 and died at Hambledon in 1791 (page 19), is uncertain.  A Thomas Lickfold was born at Tillington (between Lodsworth and Petworth in Sussex) in 1733, son of Thomas & Elizabeth Lickfold.  His (probable) great–grandfather, Anthony Lickfold, lived at River – a hamlet on the borders of Lodsworth and Tillington parishes.  This Anthony’s father was another Anthony, who was baptised at Lodsworth in 1579 – son of John Lyckfold.  Was this the same John Lyckfold who lived at Nutwell in Lurgashall parish? – See page 12.

II         The Lickfolds of Surrey

III        The Lickfolds of London – Branch 7

Most of these are “the Eastenders”, who descend from John Lickfold, a carpenter, who married Mary Shepherd at Bethnal Green in 1770 – page 45.  Where did John come from?  Where was he born, and when?  Who were his parents?  Most likely the Lickfolds of Sussex or Surrey.  Perhaps one day I shall discover whether he does link back to one of the two major trunks of the Lickfold family tree – Branch 3 in Surrey or Branch 8 at Lurgashall.

Similarly, it remains to be discovered whether the other John Lickfold, who was born somewhere in Surrey around 1791 – 96, does indeed link back to the Lickfolds of Surrey.
