Introduction

If you are an American citizen named Lickfold checking out this site (or a married lady born a Lickfold), then the chances are you descend from either Alfred Lickfold (1827 - 1900) or John Lickfold (1832 - 1907). These two brothers were both millers who emigrated from Headley, Hampshire, England to Ontario, Canada - Alfred in 1848 and John about 1852.

You may be surprised to learn, however, that their descendants are by no means the only Lickfold families alive in the world today. The Lickfolds are thriving in England - especially in Essex and around Manchester, with other family groups scattered throughout the south of England in particular.

There are also Lickfolds alive today in Canada, South Africa, Australia andNew Zealand. But we all descend from a common ancestor who lived at Lickfold in Sussex, England in the 13th century or earlier. See "Origins ofthe Name".

By the end of the 1700s there were 7 main branches of the family in England.See "The 7 Branches".

If you have found this site because you are a Lickfold, or you have a family connection, please do get in touch. If you know you descend from Alfred or John (see above), the person to contact is the site owner: Captain Fred Lickfold III, US Navy (Ret.), of Roswell, Georgia.  [Email:  fredlickfold@charter.net].

Otherwise, please contact Dr. Gordon M. Lickfold: 33 Parsonage Road, Henfield, West Sussex BN5 9JG England.

Gordon has been researching the Lickfold family history since 1972, and has a large database of information about all 7 branches of the family. He is a member of the Guild of One Name Studies, a family history society of people specifically interested in all references to a particular surname and its variants.  The acronym for this society is truly brilliant, he must be a goon to be trying to trace all the Lickfolds alive today back to our common ancestor.
